I wouldn't think you would need a disc. I have a Wiikey so I can't be sure, but I just use the GCOS disk to configure it for region free, and then it will boot up anything I throw at it.

So... I got my modded wii back, and it seems that i need a gcos boot disc to play other region games. Does that sound right?

I can't find anything conclusive that says that, although the wasabi web site says that it enables direct boot of wii GC original, import and backup. Am i interpreting this correctly, that this means that I wouldn't require a boot disc to change regions?

If I'd known that was the case, I'd just have bought a freeloader. Sure I can play "backups" now, but that doesn't really interest me.

It should work just fine. As far as I can tell, Nintendo doesn't seem to be checking where the Wii's are coming from, in fact, my little brother was able to play against US SSB:B with his JPN version (in the US).

Got it today and have been playing ever since, with a couple of breaks just to eat.

Only one character unlocked so far.

I tried out all of the controllers that you can use and prefer the Wavebird. In order of preference, I'd go with Cube controller, then it's a tossup between the Classic Controller & Wiimote only, and lastly, I'd go with the Wiimote + Nunchuk.

I played a litte bit online with my friend and it was pretty fun. Brawl will probably be the main mode we play online since multi-man co-op just seemed kind of boring. We didn't try the online home run contest, but that doesn't really seem like it'd be fun either. Too bad there's no online adventure mode.

I only played about 9% through Subspace Emissary so far, but I'll be doing more of that tonight.

So far what I don't like are some of the load times. You don't really have to wait that long, but it just seems like there's a lot more loading compared to Melee. I also don't like that you can't start up the game using the Wavebird to navigate the Wii menu. Since the Wavebird is my preferred controller for the game, I have it plugged into the player 1 port. But I have to use the Wii remote just to load the game and that ends up setting the remote as player 1 and then my Wavebird isn't recognized until I take the battery out of the remote. I might have to read the manual to see if there's a solution to that. Or maybe just plug my Wavebird into a different port.

I got this a while ago, but forgot to post about it.

I picked up the Wii Zapper with Link's Crossbow Training. The Zapper itself is alright... it does what it's supposed to do. I still haven't really found a comfortable position for holding it though. I'd probably prefer the Nyko Perfect Shot or one of the other varieties of gun shells that they sell at Dealextreme.

Link's Crossbow Training is a really short game, but you can always go back and replay levels just to get the highest score possible. It's good for a free pack-in game and probably one of those games that non-gamers will find easy to get into since there's not much to figure out. My brother and my sister-in-law really enjoyed it. Now my brother wants to get a Wii just for Wii Sports Boxing and Link's Crossbow Training (I also showed him some Wii Fit videos and he might be interested in that too if it has snowboarding).

This has nothing to do with games, but... I think they might even want a Wii just for the Photo Channel too. My bro and SIL went on a cruise and we looked at the pictures they took using the Photo Channel and everyone liked not having to look at them through a tiny digital camera screen. They even liked that you could watch videos too and liked that you could rotate the video as it was playing. And they couldn't stop laughing when we played videos backwards.

Yeah, the amount of shovelware that's just hitting the market right now kind of scares me a little. I hope Wii doesn't get a bad rep as a result, since the competition's library is gaining some quality .

The Big studios seem to be making the most of the power of 360 and PS3, so that could be why we're not seeing those ported to Wii. For me it's all about the gameplay though, and like you said Miranda - there should be more developers taking advantage of the potential a'la Zack & Wiki (thanks for the tip, by the way M!!) A game like Myst would be perfect.

Hopefully Mario Kart and Bash will give the Wii library some more substance. (they were 2 of the handful that were mentioned in the article i read.)

Would be great to see a little more quality action from 3rd party studios though - and I think Wii needs it to sustain market share in the long term. Most of the decent titles so far have been in-house.

I gotta agree with Miranda.

I think Smash Bros. will be the big hit that everyone expects it to be. And Wii Fit might be a hard sell, but I'll probably pick it up for snakes and giggles. Plus there's Mario Kart on the way. Right now there are definitely more great Wii games than I have time for, but that could just be because I get to play like once a month.

I think Wii Fit might keep the Wii's momentum going for the non-gaming crowd (all the people who bought the Wii just to play Wii Sports).

It's still pretty hard to find Wiis even this long after launch. I'm still reading people's complaints about not being able to find one in stock anywhere. So there's still a pretty big demand for it now.

With an English language release of Brawl on the horizon, that'll help sell even more Wiis.

I don't know how appealing the hardware is to third party developers though. I really wish more third parties would make some great games similar to Zack & Wiki. The Wii was just the perfect platform for that game. I want to see more innovative games like that instead of shovelware being put out by third parties.

I think the Wii has the potential to "keep it up" but it really all depends on how well developers use the hardware, and if the way they use the hardware has any sort of mass appeal to a wide variety of demographics.

I was reading a non-game-related magazine recently that had an article on their picks for the 100 biggest and best games to be coming our way for 2008. I think there were less than 10 wii games on the list. A lot of the big games coming out are multi platform but not being relased on Wii.

Do you think we'll see a slump on the way, in the success of the wii? Or will its current successful hardware sales encourage developers to embrace it more eagerly moving forward, but they're just a little slow off the mark?

This is the one you’ve all been waiting for! Wii FreeLoader lets you play ANY region of Wii or GameCube game on your Nintendo Wii! At last, you can import games from other territories and play them on your Wii…

Videogamers the world over get really frustrated when games are released in other territories long before they reach the shops in their home country, if they ever get released at all. You want to play that blockbuster survival horror which is out in Japan three months before it hits the shelves elsewhere. What about the soccer or F1 sim which only gets a European release or a gridiron football or NBL baseball game that’s never released outside the States? Or maybe you bought an imported Wii because you wanted to get it early, and you now want to play games from your own region without buying a second machine. Well, now you can. With Wii FreeLoader, you can play ANY region of game on your Wii!

Wii FreeLoader is really easy to use. Simply insert your FreeLoader disc and load it in the usual way. When the drive stops, eject the Wii FreeLoader disc and insert the game, which then loads and plays just like it would on its own region of Wii. It’s as simple as that!

Wii FreeLoader is 100% unofficial, but as it requires no modifications to your console, it does not invalidate the warranty. As well as letting you play Wii games from all regions, Wii FreeLoader also works with imported GameCube games when played on your Wii. It won’t work in a GameCube console, though – for that, you need Freeloader for GameCube, also available from Codejunkies…

Features

* Play ANY region of Wii or GameCube game on ANY Wii.
* Easy to use.
* No console modification required.
* Doesn’t invalidate warranty.
* Play games never released in your region.
* Play local games on your imported console.
* 100% unofficial.

LOL @ the "100% unofficial" part of that.

Got Zack & Wiki just this week, and have only checked it out for half an hour or so, but it seems like a lot of fun. Pretty innovative use of the wiimote, but I must say that i expected a few more games like this that made the most of the control's abilities.

I guess uniquely Wii remote based titles tie any 3rd party developers to only releasing on one console though. Hope that doesn't end up being a bit of a pitfall for the Wii in the long run.
